Feeling Good

It doesn't matter what anyone says.  This really made me feel good - like I am doing something right.

One of my students said that every day felt like a half day (at school), the day goes by so fast because he is having so much fun.

That just warmed my heart :-)

Favorite Things

Yesterday I talked about things that were sacred to me.  Now I want to share with you some of my favorite things.

Pumpkin chocolate chip cookies.  Yum.  I especially love it when my sister bakes them.  Mmmmmmm.

Pumpkin pancakes from IHOP.  Delicious!  I look forward to pumpkin season every year!

Midnight milky way candy bar.  My favorite.

A hug from my daughter.  She gives the BEST hugs!

Playing board games.  So much fun!

The A&E's version of Pride and Prejudice - the 5 hour long miniseries.  Love that Mr. Darcy!  Love the book!

California Pizza Kitchen - they took away my favorite pizza but I still love that restaurant.

Disneyland!  Need I say more???

Redwood trees in Northern California.  Love them!

Christmas music - I could listen to it all year long!  But there are so many different and wonderful songs I really don't like hearing the same ones over and over again on the radio.

That's it for now!  Thanks for reading!

Sacred Things

So, a few days ago I posted about our society's lack of holding things sacred, like Thanksgiving.  Today I thought I'd post about something I hold sacred.

Spending time with my family, especially my daughter.  She's growing up so fast and I'm afraid before to long I will realize I missed watching her grow and develop.

The gospel of Jesus Christ.  My testimony is very precious to me. I am afraid I take my relationship with my Savior for granted.

I suppose everything else just falls into one of those two categories.

Is Nothing Sacred?

I have been thinking about this a lot.

Is nothing sacred?  At least when it comes to the world at large.  I know many individual hold many things sacred, but us as a society. Is nothing sacred?

During the days leading up to Thanksgiving, I was horrified to learn that stores would be open on Thanksgiving Day. What?  Really?  Is money really the only thing the drives us as a society?  What ever happened to spending quality time with the family?  What ever happened to having a holiday? A day away from work?  Have we really become such a selfish society that we fail to think about our fellow man?  Those people who go out to eat for Thanksgiving, or go to the movie, or shop on Thursday and basically saying that they have the right to have a day off from work but others do not. People have to show up to work, and leave their families and their turkey dinners to open their business so that other people who don't have to work can eat, shop, or be entertained.  It's just not fair.  I am one of those lucky people who not only have Thursday off, but I get Friday off too.  I wish we were all so lucky.

I understand that some professions cannot closed down for the weekend.  Care givers for the elderly and for the physically and/or mentally challenged need to work on those days because those people they care for always need assistance.  We need hospitals, fire departments, and police officers to be on duty for obvious reasons.  The occasional pharmacy and gas station also need to be open for those rare emergencies.  There may be others that I can't think of at the moment, but I understand everyone can't have the day off.  However, if the only reason is to make more money, then it probably doesn't need to be open.

Now, I understand the desire to go out to eat.  My family did that once, one year.  There was only going to be 4 of us and my mom didn't want to make a big meal just for the four of us.  However, since that time, instead of going out to eat, we have just found other people to celebrate with.  I am also guilty of going to the movies on Thanksgiving Day.  However, I believe it only happened once. These rare occasions have only happened because those businesses were open.  If they had not been opened, other arrangements would have been made.  I am also guilty of buying something at the grocery store on Thanksgiving day.  I do appreciate grocery stores who are open until noon (or even 10 am) on Thursday.  However, if they were not open on Thursday, I would make sure I had the things I needed Wednesday night.
