It doesn't matter what anyone says.  This really made me feel good - like I am doing something right.

One of my students said that every day felt like a half day (at school), the day goes by so fast because he is having so much fun.

That just warmed my heart :-)

Favorite Things

Yesterday I talked about things that were sacred to me.  Now I want to share with you some of my favorite things.

Pumpkin chocolate chip cookies.  Yum.  I especially love it when my sister bakes them.  Mmmmmmm.

Pumpkin pancakes from IHOP.  Delicious!  I look forward to pumpkin season every year!

Midnight milky way candy bar.  My favorite.

A hug from my daughter.  She gives the BEST hugs!

Playing board games.  So much fun!

The A&E's version of Pride and Prejudice - the 5 hour long miniseries.  Love that Mr. Darcy!  Love the book!

California Pizza Kitchen - they took away my favorite pizza but I still love that restaurant.

Disneyland!  Need I say more???

Redwood trees in Northern California.  Love them!

Christmas music - I could listen to it all year long!  But there are so many different and wonderful songs I really don't like hearing the same ones over and over again on the radio.

That's it for now!  Thanks for reading!

Sacred Things

So, a few days ago I posted about our society's lack of holding things sacred, like Thanksgiving.  Today I thought I'd post about something I hold sacred.

Spending time with my family, especially my daughter.  She's growing up so fast and I'm afraid before to long I will realize I missed watching her grow and develop.

The gospel of Jesus Christ.  My testimony is very precious to me. I am afraid I take my relationship with my Savior for granted.

I suppose everything else just falls into one of those two categories.

Is Nothing Sacred?

I have been thinking about this a lot.

Is nothing sacred?  At least when it comes to the world at large.  I know many individual hold many things sacred, but us as a society. Is nothing sacred?

During the days leading up to Thanksgiving, I was horrified to learn that stores would be open on Thanksgiving Day. What?  Really?  Is money really the only thing the drives us as a society?  What ever happened to spending quality time with the family?  What ever happened to having a holiday? A day away from work?  Have we really become such a selfish society that we fail to think about our fellow man?  Those people who go out to eat for Thanksgiving, or go to the movie, or shop on Thursday and basically saying that they have the right to have a day off from work but others do not. People have to show up to work, and leave their families and their turkey dinners to open their business so that other people who don't have to work can eat, shop, or be entertained.  It's just not fair.  I am one of those lucky people who not only have Thursday off, but I get Friday off too.  I wish we were all so lucky.

I understand that some professions cannot closed down for the weekend.  Care givers for the elderly and for the physically and/or mentally challenged need to work on those days because those people they care for always need assistance.  We need hospitals, fire departments, and police officers to be on duty for obvious reasons.  The occasional pharmacy and gas station also need to be open for those rare emergencies.  There may be others that I can't think of at the moment, but I understand everyone can't have the day off.  However, if the only reason is to make more money, then it probably doesn't need to be open.

Now, I understand the desire to go out to eat.  My family did that once, one year.  There was only going to be 4 of us and my mom didn't want to make a big meal just for the four of us.  However, since that time, instead of going out to eat, we have just found other people to celebrate with.  I am also guilty of going to the movies on Thanksgiving Day.  However, I believe it only happened once. These rare occasions have only happened because those businesses were open.  If they had not been opened, other arrangements would have been made.  I am also guilty of buying something at the grocery store on Thanksgiving day.  I do appreciate grocery stores who are open until noon (or even 10 am) on Thursday.  However, if they were not open on Thursday, I would make sure I had the things I needed Wednesday night.

Recycling Truck

The other day on the radio I heard about a two year old that was run over (and killed) by a recycling truck.  I couldn't help but think of my own two year old and how she loves to dart out into the middle of the street.  She knows she shouldn't do it and is punished every time she does.  She doesn't do it all the time because she knows she isn't allowed to but every once in awhile she darts out anyway.  Then she goes to time out and gets lectured about the dangers of the street and big cars that can't see little girls.

I feel for those parents.  How devastating.

Emails at work

I heard a news report on the radio about how much time is spent at work checking emails.  Then it got me thinking. The report was missing so many factors.  Why were they checking their emails?  Were they responding to customers? Were they answering questions from co-workers?

I know someone who works with people all over the world. They will send him their questions via email.  They are working on the other side of the world while he is sleeping (day time there, night time here).  Then in the morning he has to address all those email questions.  He can't call them, they're sleeping!

Sure, there are people who waste their time at work responding to personal emails, too.  Anyway, my point is, there are lots of people who spend a lot of time responding to emails during work because it is a part of their job.  I think that report needs to be redone and retold giving us more facts.

Two Year Olds

I read an article about a parent giving advice on how to avoid two year tantrums.  There was a lot of good advice but there were some things that I disagreed with.

She stated that it is best to stick to strict routines and rituals.  That is true, but you also don't want your child to go into a tantrum when something interrupts that routine or ritual.  Let's face it, life doesn't always follow a routine.  Things come up and and our plan for the day has to change and we need to teach our children not to throw a tantrum when that happens.

So, what is the solution? I have found when a child throws a tantrum it is because he/she feels like he/she is not being heard. They just want to communicate.  We want them to communicate so we need to let them.  Just because they tell us something or ask for something, it does not mean that they should get what they want. We, as the parent, can still say no to the request, but acknowledge that you understand what the child wants.

Not only that, but we need to also communicate to the child what we are doing.  When it is time to turn off the television, don't just turn it off, tell the child what you are going to do, "Okay, it is time to turn off the t.v." Or give a warning, "When this show is over I am going to turn off the t.v." and then tell the child you will turn it off just before you actually do.  A tantrum may still come but it will probably be less traumatic because you have communicated with the child.

If a child is begging for ice-cream, don't just say, "no."  Tell him/her why.  "I know you want ice-cream, but I am sorry, we don't have any," and then show the child that there isn't any.  "You can have ice-cream but first you have to finish your dinner," would be another option.

Of course every child is different.  Yes, have a routine so the child knows what to expect but also communicate with the toddler by listening, responding, and talking with the child.

Public Restrooms

I am a huge advocate for saving water. Having lived in a desert or in a drought all my life, I know the value of water.  However, I find that public restrooms solutions to conserving water can not only be frustrating but a waste of water.

I don't know how many times I've gone to the bathroom at a public restroom and the toilet flushes before I am done.  One time it flushed 3 times before I was done.  I know it is disgusting when someone doesn't flush the toilet when they are done, but flushing 3 times for one person is a little excessive don't you think?  My favorite is when I am done and the toilet refuses to flush on it's own and then I have to find the button to flush it.  One time I couldn't find it.  I pressed everything, I waved my hand everywhere.  Nothing.  Frustrating.

Now, let's talk about the sink.  Sometimes they have the faucets that you press down and the water pours out for a predetermined period of time.  Sometime it is way too short and I have to press it more than once to get all the soap off my hands.  Other times, it keeps running long after I have finished washing my hands.  Then there are the motion sensor faucets.  Those are fun.  I often find myself waving all around the sink trying to figure out where the motion sensor is so that it will finally turn on.  Other times I get it to turn on but if I move my hand into a different position it will turn off.  Sometimes it will turn on but will run for a predetermined period of time and will turn off in the middle of my washing and I have to wave my hands around to get it turn on again.  Then some of them have the opposite effect, I am done, but the water is still running.

On to paper conservation.  .  .  Really?  Who really thinks that that small piece of nonabsorbent pre-cut piece of paper towel will dry my hands?  Do you know what I am talking about?  Those paper towel dispensers where you pull down on the paper towel or you wave your hand in front of the dispenser and a predetermined size of paper towel tears out.  If you actually washed your hands thoroughly one of those pieces really isn't going to do it.  However, I did notice that one was plenty for my 2 year old daughter.  My adult hands though need about 3 of those to collect all the moisture from my hands.

I know theses measures are not strictly for conserving water.  It also poses as a safety precaution.  I am grateful I don't have to touch things that others may or may not have contaminated due to not washing their hands.  I am a huge fan of efforts to not spread germs.

However, I find it ridiculous when only some efforts are made to prevent me to touch the germs of others but not every way.  Here is an example.  I can go into a bathroom where the toilet automatically flushes, the soap dispenser automatically dispenses the soap, the water automatically turns on, and there is an automatic hand air dryer to dry off my hands.  Then, when I go to leave the bathroom, there is a door exiting the bathroom in which I have to pull the door open, touching the handle of a door, in which someone could have come along, used the bathroom, not washed her hands and now I get to touch the same door she did.  Hmmm, so much for all that automatic "hands free" stuff I just went through.  Sometimes I am lucky and it is not a hand air dryer but there are paper towels and I can open the door with a paper towel in my hand.  The best restrooms are the ones where you push on the door to leave.  I can stand my back up to the door, push on it by walking backwards and turn to leave, without ever having had to touch the door with my hands.

I believe that if we can send a man (or woman - I like to refer "man" as in "mankind") into space, if we can take pictures of things in space hundreds of light years away, if we can make telephones that work like a mini computer, if we can store gigabytes of information in something no bigger than my fingernail, then why can we design a bathroom that effectively conserves energy, water, and stops the spread of germs?

Safe Weekend

As Americans in general we usually look for reasons to vacation and take time away from work.  We all like the 3 day weekends!  Let's not forget to show off your patriotism.  Let's not forget to do our part to keep others safe.  As you enjoy your freedoms this weekend, please don't forget that others have those freedoms too.

Have fun and enjoy your family this weekend!

The Fourth of July

Independence Day!

We live in a great country.  We have so many freedoms.  I am so grateful for those men and women who have fought for our country, our rights, and our freedoms.  Now it is up to all of us to do our part to keep those freedoms alive.  Keep it for ourselves and keep it for others.

We want everyone to be happy and safe.  Rules and laws help keep everyone safe and the only way that can happen is if we all follow those laws.  It saddens me when I hear of people abusing our freedoms.  Our right to bear arms does not give us the right to harm others just because things don't go our way.

In the preamble to the constitution it states that one of the reasons for writing the constitution is to insure domestic tranquility to ourselves and our posterity.  What does that mean?  Well, I have the right to feel safe in my environment, my community.  So do you.  We all do.  So we need to allow others that same freedom.  We need to help others feel safe and at peace in their own environment.  Yes, you have a right to have a party in your home.  I have the right to have a party in my home.  We all do.  But I also have the right to a nice, peaceful night's sleep. So do you.  Everyone does.  So that means I need to make sure that my party does not disturb your right to a safe, peaceful night's sleep and vice versa.  That is the beauty of that part of the constitution.  We all have rights and we all need to help protect the rights of others.  If we can do that we will protect not only our freedoms, but the freedom of everyone.

Television

I did not want my daughter to watch television until after she was 2 years old.  That is very difficult to do and I failed.  It is so hard because I know she learns so much from the educational shows she watches.  She learned how to get dressed by watching Sesame Street (the same episode a dozen times).  She is recognizing her letters thanks to Super Why!

So, I have decided to limit her television watching to 30-60 minutes a day.  However, sometimes it ends up being longer and other times it has been a babysitter while I try to fill out a job application on line.  UGH, things I never wanted to do.

Sometimes I wish I could get paid to be a stay at home mom.

Stay At Home Mom

So I've been reading about some stay at home moms who regret staying home with their kids.  I know being home all day with your kids isn't for everyone, so if it isn't your cup of tea, I recommend finding some part time work to do in or out of the home to help you cope.  It's like the sign in my mom's house says, "If Mama ain't happy, nobody is happy."

I, on the other hand, hate having to work out of the home.  It is necessary and I dread it.  I want to be the one who raises my daughter, not other people.  Now, I am finding myself struggling with trying to make money from home.  I spend all this time working and networking and job searching that, although I am home, I feel like I am still neglecting her.

I know it can be done.  I can find a way to make a living from home and still give the attention my daughter, husband, and housework require.  I know there is an adjustment period.  I am just afraid time will run out and I'll end up working out of the home again and all this time I've spent at home trying to make a living could have been spent being with her and being a better housekeeper.

Free and Reduced Lunches

I believe in helping children. . . I really do.  I also believe in TEACHING children.  The problem I have seen with free and reduced lunches is that students begin to take things for granted.  When students get something for nothing the fail to see the value of the product.  Many people wonder what is wrong with education today.  Well, one of those things is that the students have no motivation to do well in school.  Well at least in the lower economic areas, what are the students learning?  If they don't get a job, they will get free food (food stamps) and free health care (can't turn people away).  Free and reduced lunch just gives them a preview of that.  What about parent responsibility?  What is motivating those parents to take care of their children?  They don't have to, the schools are providing their breakfasts and lunches.

Now, I know there are families that are really struggling to provide for their family and they are really trying to do all they can but they just can't make ends meet.  In those cases, free and reduced lunches, free breakfasts, food stamps, and free health care are very helpful for those families until they can finally get ahead.  The problem is that those programs reward people who aren't doing their fair share in society and punishing those who are doing all they can and more.

I just feel like there needs to be more accountability.  I read a historical fiction book that took place during WWII.  A boy was attending a private school but his parents couldn't afford the tuition.  The boy received a scholarship from the institution so he could attend.  Part of that scholarship he was he was to help in the cafeteria during lunch.  In other words, he had to work for that scholarship.  Now, I have mentioned that to others and they said that it wasn't fair that the student had to suffer because the parents couldn't afford the tuition.  Well, the boy in the story didn't really complain about it.  In fact, in my opinion, it taught the boy the value of a good education.  He was going to value his education because he had to work for it.  He wasn't going to slack off on his school work.

I just feel there needs to be more accountability for the students and the parents.

Finding a way to exercise

With all the technology we have out and with all the demands we have on our time, sometimes it is difficult to find the time to exercise.  Something always seems to take priority over exercising.  What do you do to keep in shape?

Here are things I like to do:

1) Take a walk with my daughter, she loves the out doors.  She also loves her stroller.  So when she is done with her walk, I push her in the stroller for about a mile.

2) When I watch a show, I try to bring out my step and do some step aerobics.

Well, those are just two of the things I am currently trying to do.

Read the interesting article posted on Low Cost Style's blog.
